Budget hacks

6 ways to save smart in Thailand

📅
Avoid New Year + Songkran
Late December and Songkran in April push up hotels and domestic fares noticeably · shifting your trip by a week or two trims the hotel bill.
🍜
Eat street food first
A one-plate rice dish or bowl of noodles runs 50-80 baht and fills you up · busy local stalls beat malls and hotels on both price and taste.
🚆
In Bangkok, ride the BTS/MRT
The skytrain and metro cost 16-62 baht a ride and skip the traffic · check your hotel is within walking distance of a station.
🏝️
Book island tours ahead
Speedboat trips to Phi Phi or nearby islands run roughly 1,000-2,500 baht per person from Phuket · booking online beforehand usually beats the beach price.
📶
Set up an eSIM before you fly
Install an eSIM before landing and you're online the moment you arrive · usually cheaper than a daily SIM or pocket WiFi for solo travellers.
💳
Withdraw in larger amounts
Thai ATMs charge foreign cards about 220 baht per withdrawal · take out more at once to cut the number of fees, and keep cash for small shops.
FAQ

FAQ · about Thailand budgets

How accurate is this estimate?

These are mid-range estimates drawn from Wherebest's per-city budget pages (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket). Your actual cost can vary ±15-20% based on: hotel picks (guesthouse vs hotel) · season (high season and New Year cost more) · personal style (lots of shopping or multiple tours). Use it as a planning starting point, not a fixed quote.

What's the difference between backpacker, mid-range and comfort?

Backpacker = hostels and guesthouses around 500-900 baht a night, street food, public transport · Mid-range = 3-star hotels around 1,200-2,500 baht a night, a mix of sit-down and street eats, the odd Grab · Comfort = 4-5 star hotels from about 4,500 baht a night, Grab everywhere, more activities.

How are domestic flights calculated?

Toggle it on and we use round-trip-per-person estimates for popular routes (Bangkok to Phuket or Chiang Mai) across three tiers: LCC around 2,400 baht · full-service around 4,200 baht · peak (Songkran/New Year) around 6,500 baht · If you have a real fare, type it into the "Or enter your own" box and we use that instead.

Why does multi-region add to the budget?

Picking "multi-region" adds roughly 1,500-3,000 baht per trip for inter-city transport (train, coach, or a domestic flight) and uses country-average hotel and food rates · plan a 10-15% buffer for switching-region logistics.

When is Thailand cheapest to visit?

The rainy season (June-September) brings the lowest hotel and tour prices, especially on the Andaman coast · high season (November-February) has the best weather but the highest prices · New Year and Songkran are peak periods when prices spike and rooms fill fast, so book ahead.

Which part of the budget tends to blow out?

Usually activities and tours (island trips, elephant sanctuaries, shows) and souvenirs, which people under-budget · Phuket island tours start around 1,000-2,500 baht per person and it's tempting to do several · set an activities budget and pick the ones you really want.

How do I budget a family of four?

Enter 4 travellers and we cost the hotel as 2 rooms (or a family room) · young children often stay free · pick "mid-range" and add the activities you want · a child's share of the budget is usually 30-40% lower than an adult's (cheaper tickets, fewer souvenirs).
